The Early Works Collection-Lacquer Paintings

1973
This collection includes approximately 47 unsold remaining lacquer on Masonite paintings done from the 1960's through the 1970's along with 5 oil paintings, all measuring about 4ft x 4ft. I chose the square shape because I thought it best enhanced the illusion of infinite space, and influenced my compositions in interesting ways.
I have numbered these paintings as part of their titles. Also it should be noted that because of my having made a conscious effort not to sell all of the lacquer paintings (some were sold) and an effort to keep the remaining ones together as a group, and well as my being very thankful to Mr. Carl Swallow, who transported many of them back to Los Angeles from Mexico City for me in his van, all resulting in there being enough remaining lacquer paintings to form this collection.
In regards to style, the paintings range from impressionism to expressionism or surrealism depending on my mood at the time. One of my goals has always been to do paintings that don't repeat, or look too much like other paintings that I have done. Each one is an original and in many cases there was no pre planning as to subject matter, so that the subject matter often developed and evolved during the painting process.
Recently I have decided, because of my advancing age, to put "The Early Works Collection-Lacquer Paintings" out into the public domain for public viewing. Many of the paintings in this collection represent a record of a journey into the unknown and into the "beyond". It includes paintings with titles such as, Scene from the Third Eye, River of God, Tunnel Beyond, Astral Winter, and Susanna and the Elders. I was introduced to Vedanta and Eastern mysticism in Mexico, which was reinforced by later travel to India.
The lacquer painting medium was, for as long as I was able to use it, an ideal medium for me to express myself and create some beautiful and unique works of art that may be the only collection of lacquer on Masonite paintings by any artist in the world.
